What Two-Weeks of Rain in Iceland Taught me

I recently travelled to Iceland for 18 days. It was my dream trip and I had spent nearly a year and a half planning it. I had heard from so many people that Iceland is the most amazing and beautiful place and I couldn’t wait to see for myself. When we picked up our rental car it was warm and sunny. Then, over the course of our 4-hour drive to our first destination, the weather progressively got worse. Out of our 18-day vacation, only three or four days were pleasant weather. The remaining two weeks were rainy, foggy, windy, and chilly. We were there to see beautiful landscapes and to hike, but sometimes it was difficult to get excited about the day’s itinerary when, for example, our seven-hour drive to see the beautiful coastline fjords turned into a rainy, foggy whiteout where we were just clinging to winding, cliffside roads without being about to see what was on the other side of the cliff.

We saw beautiful things, but by the 18th day, I was ready to go home and escape the dreary weather. On our last day we took a walking tour of Reykjavik, the country’s capital and largest city. It was Iceland’s hottest day of the year, a sunny 68 degrees. As we continued on the tour, the weather started to get windier and we just knew that rain was right around the corner. When asked about the weather, our tour guide replied:

there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad attitudes and bad clothing.

This statement, and her positive attitude, stuck with me. Here I was, just counting down the hours until I could get out of the rain, when I realized that in doing so, I was counting down the hours until I left one of the most beautiful places I had ever seen (even if I had to squint at it through the fog to see it) and might never return to.

A Mantra for Everyday Life

Upon returning home, this statement stuck in my head. It felt so relevant to, well, everything really. The framework of this statement can really apply to any of life’s unpleasant or difficult circumstances:

There’s no such thing as (insert something unpleasant or difficult), just bad (internal mindset) and bad (what you do about it or how you prepare).

Recently, my day started with me complaining and having a woe-is-me attitude. All of a sudden, my Icelandic tour guide’s statement flashed into my consciousness, There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad attitudes and bad clothing. You could interpret her statement to mean that we should be positive no matter the situation (not having a bad attitude in bad weather) and find a way to make it better (wearing proper clothing that makes the bad weather more bearable). However, in my woe-is-me moment, this statement all of a sudden took on a different meaning for me.

Taking Responsibility for your Thoughts & Actions

At the end of the day, I chose to go to Iceland - a place known for the bad weather I had been cursing for two weeks and here I was having a bad attitude towards a choice that I made. True, the circumstances of the weather were outside of my control, but by wearing proper clothing (which I had actually prepared for), I could pretty much continue on doing whatever was on the day’s itinerary.

This reminded me that in the rest of my life, I needed to take responsibility for my thoughts, how I’m acting because of those thoughts, and what’s happening because of those actions.

This was something that I had not done very well with my first business.

For years I put my coworking space business as a secondary priority and made other interests my main priority. My business results were lousy and I was just sort of hoping they’d getting better. I was bitter about the fact that I got screwed over by my business partner and had to take over the business as a solo endeavor. I never signed-up to manage the day-to-day operations - that was supposed to be his role. I used this as an excuse to avoid being a good business owner (and thus not really take responsibility for what was going on in my business because of it).

I had been just hoping that word of mouth would bring new members in without really doing anything to generate that word of mouth. I had been just hoping that my business financials were working out while not really digging into the numbers because I didn’t want to face the fact that they weren’t stellar.

I realize that this sounds absolutely ridiculous in writing. My hope in being honest here is to maybe help you shed some light on why you aren’t seeing the results you desire in your own business. It took me a long time to come to these realizations, be able to say them is such ridiculous, matter-of-fact language, and take responsibility for my lousy business results.

I knew I had to change my mindsets and my methods if I wanted to be a better business owner and get better business results. I needed to take responsibility.

A New Mantra for Entrepreneurs

There's no such thing as lousy results.001.jpeg.001.jpeg.001.jpeg

Now, of course, there is such a thing as lousy results, but my point here is that those are usually just the product of lousy mindsets and methods. By framing it this way, it makes you take responsibility for the results we get, and once you take responsibility, you have now created an opportunity for change.

Without the willingness to uncover the cause of the lousy results (mindsets or methods), it’s impossible to change those things for better results.

Are your Business Results Lousy?

If you’re not achieving the success you desire, ask yourself if something about your mindset and/or method of running your business may be holding you back.

Chances are that either your mindset could use a boost or your methods could use some tweaking. This isn’t an exercise in blame or self-pity, instead it’s an exercise to shine light on the reality of the situation so that you can learn the cause, take responsibility for it, forgive yourself, and then move on to a better mindset, better methods, and ultimately, better results.

Recognizing Lousy Mindsets & Methods

Our mindsets are often-times created from years and years of telling ourselves the stories that shape how we view and show up in this world. These stories are often-times lies that hold us back. My good friend and success coach, Kelly Beischel, calls them gremlins. She helps people develop a better mindset by recognizing their gremlins and finding ways to thrive despite them.

Changing your mindset is often-times the key to being able (and willing) to change your methods. And when you change both of these, that’s when the magic happens.

Recognizing lousy mindsets and methods and figuring out how to make them better is no easy task though. We are often just too close to it to be able to see how we are self-sabotaging or missing the opportunities in front of us.

That’s why I created free downloadable reflection questions to help you get uncover your biggest opportunity areas so that you know where to focus to get better results. You can download it below.
